La Maison de la Vicomté is a large family home in La Vicomté-sur-Rance, in the Rance valley, between Dinan and Saint-Malo. We rent it out in full, like a large holiday home, for 2 to 12 guests.
Let’s be clear from the start: the house is not right on the water. It sits in the village, at 7 rue de la Rance, and you reach the river on foot, without the car: a ten-minute walk takes you to the water’s edge at Morgreve. It’s what our guests love most: in the morning you set off on foot from the front door, and you are on the banks of the Rance before your coffee has gone cold.
The Rance on foot, from the house
The Rance is a ten-minute walk away, at Morgreve. From there, two walks start right from the house. Both are flat, easy with children, and take about an hour there and back.
The Prat tide mill, via Morgreve. Walk down the Morgreve road between the fields, through a small wood, and the Rance suddenly appears as you leave the trees. A waymarked path then follows the water to an old tide mill. 2.3 km one way, about 30 minutes. Read the Prat tide mill walk (in French)
The towpath, to the Châtelier lock. The old track where horses once towed the barges is now a flat, car-free path. To the lock at La Hisse, allow 2 km and about 25 minutes; carry on and it takes you all the way to the port of Dinan. Read our towpath page (in French)
A river that becomes the sea
By the house, the Rance is already not quite a river: it is an estuary, where the water rises and falls with the tides. At high tide the water laps at the banks; at low tide the mudflats appear, the birds arrive and the old slipways re-emerge. The landscape is never the same from one hour to the next.
The Rance is also one of the very few rivers in the world with a tidal power station, at its mouth between Saint-Malo and Dinard. Check the tide times before you set off on a walk: it makes all the difference.
Along the Rance, around the house
Mordreuc. The little port of Pleudihen-sur-Rance, facing the estuary. We go there for the terrace of La Cale de Mordreuc, right by the water.
Saint-Suliac. One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, on the same bank as the house: 10 to 15 minutes by car, or about forty minutes by bike via Mordreuc. Our page on Saint-Suliac and Mont Garrot (in French)
Dinan and Léhon. Further up the valley, the port of Dinan, its viaduct and the Rue du Jerzual, then Léhon abbey just next door. Dinan is 15 minutes away by car.
On the water. From April to October you can hire canoes, kayaks and paddleboards at the Plouër-sur-Rance slipway, on the opposite bank, for an hour or half a day. All our favourite places around the house (in French)
The Rance by bike
The valley is one of the loveliest corners of Brittany to explore by bike: the towpath joins the Ille-et-Rance canal, completely flat, and a greenway links Dinan to Dinard. Several e-bike hire shops are based in Dinan. At the house, the garden is fully enclosed, so your bikes are safe overnight.
The house
A 190 m² house designed for families and groups of friends:
- 5 bedrooms, for 2 to 12 guests (the fifth bedroom opens from 9 guests)
- a large kitchen, a dining room with two tables and twelve chairs, a living room with a fireplace
- an enclosed garden and a terrace, with a plancha grill
- fast Starlink internet, for anyone who needs to keep an eye on work
- private parking for 3 cars, with an EV charging point on request
Dinan is 15 minutes away, Saint-Malo 30 minutes and Mont-Saint-Michel 45 minutes. Pleudihen-sur-Rance, just next door, has a bakery, a supermarket and a pharmacy. See the house in pictures
When to come to the Rance
Spring is the most beautiful season: the banks are green and the paths almost empty. In summer, walk early in the morning or in the evening, and finish on a terrace by the water. Autumn brings the colours, the big tides and evenings by the fire. In winter the valley is peaceful, and the house can also be rented for longer stays.
“Not overlooked, with a safe, fully enclosed garden… Lovely walks straight from the house.”
